The Enormous Impact of Miniaturisation

Here are a few examples – Mobile Phones

The first mobile phones were laughably large affairs. They were essentially a car battery with an oversized handset plonked on the top; all in all they were cumbersome, heavy and not very ‘mobile’ at all! Oh, and they were also incredibly expensive.

However, the twenty-first century has seen a massive improvement in the world of ‘Moby’s’. These days you can even buy yourself a wristwatch that doubles as a mobile phone.

Let’s just hope that designers don’t allow mobile phones to become too small. Writing a text message can be fiddly enough as it is.

Film

Remember the clunky old VHS tapes of yesteryear? Or how about those huge and apparently ‘revolutionary’ VideoDiscs? Yep, DVDs were certainly a big improvement; because at one time, anyone with more than eight movies to their name would be forced to get a larger house.

And now that films can be stored on computers or pen drives, having a mammoth collection will no longer cause any problems!

Music

It’s all been much the same story with music. CDs were a giant step forwards and the invention of MP3s has changed everything forever.

But many of us still miss those old ‘vinyl’ albums. There was just something really special about them. They had larger artwork to drool over and nice big lyric sheets to read. A record was certainly far more personal than an anonymous digital download.
Still, that’s progress.
Games Consoles

There has never been a real problem with games consoles being too big, but even these have been miniaturised over time. It’s now common practice for a manufacturer to reissue a ‘slimline’ version of an already popular console.

However, you can’t help but wonder why they didn’t just sell the smaller version in the first place.

Home Computers

The first proper home PCs really were hulking great monsters! They were big, square and their ample proportions were exaggerated even further by their overall colour. For some reason, most manufacturers insisted on creating them in a rather horrid light grey.

But time is a great shrinker. The advent of TFT monitors has made a massive difference to overfull workstations all around the world and computers themselves now take up far less space than their ugly predecessors did.

Today’s PCs are also available in far more palatable hues!

And, since the introduction of the laptop, the Netbook and the palmtop, computers have become even more diddy!

Cars

Even our cars have become much smaller over the years. However, there are other reasons for this.

We are all much more aware of our impact on the environment, so smaller and greener vehicles are the obvious way to go. They release less pollution into the atmosphere and will do many more miles to the gallon!

TVs

Modern televisions are still just as big but not from front to back.

Flat-screen TVs have made a huge difference to hundreds of thousands of homes. It is no longer necessary to have a whopping great big goggle box that takes up half of your living space!
